The Life and Successes of Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas was born as Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie. He lived from July 24, 1802 to December 5, 1870. Dumas was born near Soissons, France. His father died when he was just four years old, leaving the family with very little money. In addition, Dumas was not a very good student; however had very beautiful handwriting. He began to write musical comedies and historical plays which got him much attention and popularity. He later found work as the secretary to the Duke of Orleans, writing plays from 1825-1826. His first major work was Henri III et sa cour which brought him much success among the community. However, the new king was unfavorable of his work and political views, and banished him from France.
Following his period of banishment, Dumas returned to Paris and began writing plays once again. He worked in collaboration with many other actors at the time and produced many famous plays including The Three Musketeers (1844), The Count of Monte Cristo (1846), and Le Vicomte de Bragelonne (1850). Upon getting tied up in many debts through his many affairs, Dumas found himself in the need to money and died in 1870 leaving his family in poverty.
As French writer, Dumas was best known for his historical novels with adventure. His most successful novels were The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. Over 200 of his novels have been converted into films in the 20th and 21st centuries. He still inspires many writers and actors today through the immense detail and imagery in his work.
